!±8± Your Car's Electrical System - The Easy Explanation

Hi everyone and welcome back to our short series on automotive how to guides for the new weekend warrior auto mechanic. This isn't meant for the professional and seasoned auto tech, but instead it's for the common guy who is looking to get his hands a little greasy on a Saturday afternoon. In previous articles, we had covered a lot of tools but in today's article I'm going to take a quick overview of what you car's electrical system does. It's critical to understand your electrical sys. before you begin to try to diagnose any problems or failures. It's even more important to know what major functions the electrical system is responsible for.

Of course, your electrical sys. is responsible for providing that needed spark that let's your engine run. Without providing that spark, ignition could never occur and this all would be a mute point. But beyond just that the electrical system does these other important things.

-It provides the power required by your starter to get the engine spinning and started.

-As stated before it fires the spark plugs so that your engine can ignite the fuel and air to run.

-In a computer controlled fuel injection system, your electrical sys. opens and closes your fuel injectors to allow the engine to run properly.

-It generates and distributes power throughout your car via the charging system which we will discuss soon.

-It stores the excessive energy by charging the battery.

-It's responsible for running a variety of other electrical gizmo's in your car such as the power locks or power windows, even your horn.

Your car's electrical system does a lot and is required so maintain it well, you will need it.
